Back to the original thought in this thread, it appears that all of you who thought that "Guppy" was intentional were right. You win the prize!
Farther along in the book, there is this sentence:

So now it is obvious that saying Guppy instead of Minnow was intentional. To what end, I don't know. Maybe that will be revealed later in the book.
