Audiobooks have been part of iBooks, then books on the iPhone for several years now.

I've actually been using the Audible app via CarPlay. Yes, I do find that I have to pause and start the book via the phone from time to time. I only tried Books via CarPlay briefly, just to see what it was like and to make sure it worked. I'm hoping that ios 13 fixes those issues.
