IMO this is true most of the time with prequels written for ongoing series. I'm sure it's not true for all of them, but in the series I've read that included a sequel later in the series, I tend to think there's stuff included that had been slowly released in the early books in the series. I usually suggest first time readers to read series based on release dates. You can always go back and read in chronological order later.
