The key to all this is the serial number of the device. Your friend needs to deregister the Kindle from his account. This can be done via computer. You then need to go to Amazon.com and register the Kindle to your account. From then on, when you purchase a book, you will specifiy that it be delivered to your Kindle via computer. You then download the book and put it on your Kindle via the usb cable.

This is a similiar transaction to what people do when they purchase a second hand Kindle from ebay or friend. If you have any further questions, contact Kindle support and ask your questions. Avoid explaining about being out of the U.S. - just tell them you are not in a Whispernet zone.
