You know what though, I hack around with software all day for my job. When I'm relaxing and reading a book, I want something that "just works". I don't want to have to worry about what format my ebook is in, I expect it to "just work". (I assume Calibre will convert appropriately.)
Calibre will do whatever you have told it to do. If you've paid no attention at all, I'm guessing you're loading epubs or even mobis onto your Kobo (hell, even PDFs); if you would answer this repeatedly-asked and highly relevant question we might have more chance of helping you. Remember we are all volunteers; posturing about how you think it should work will achieve nothing here. If you don't know what format you are loading, ask and I'm sure someone will help (right now I think we're assuming that since you've asserted your software credentials, you know how, but some knowledge fields are very specialised I guess).

Load kepubs, get a good sleepcover and see how your experience is then. Set Calibre up once for this and it will do it forevermore, until you tell it to stop. It doesn't require constant fiddling. Come back and ask further questions if you have them. Some might be solved by a very simple patching process, some might have other answers.

Or if you want it to "just work" with zero setup or input from you, buy only from the Kobo ebookstore *shrug*
