I finished this awhile ago, although a bit too late to be useful to this thread. However, I'm posting now because there's a new film coming out this month called Depraved, which reminded me of this book. It's not based on this book but rather like this book on the original Frankenstein and has a modern setting. It's not set in the Middle East but rather in the States, but similarly interweaves themes of modern war, morality and violence into it, such as being about an army medic with PTSD who puts the monster together.
