But one must keep in mind that the eMMC is not trivial to replace (chip rework station, reworking skills, ...)

Not for a device that the user has failed to create the required backup files (I have posted a script for that purpose here.)
I.E: Some of the user and device information lives OUTSIDE of the file system. My posted script will backup that information also. And you will be unable to use the new device if you do not have that information available.
