I can't recommend any from the $1 level. The one I've read,
Darkship Revenge, is very good, but the second in a series.
At the next level I recommend
Once a Hero, Agent of Change, Undercity and
The Shadow of Saganami. Once a Hero and
Undercity are the first in each series.
Agent of Change is a reasonable starting point.
The Shadow of Saganami probably isn't the best place to start.
In the top level, I recommend
Darkship Thieves (the first in the Darkship series of which Darkship Revenge is the second),
Lt Leary Commanding (1st in series),
Fledgling (another reasonable place to start),
In Fury Born (standalone),
A Call to Duty (first in prequel series), On Basilisk Station (first in series),
The Rats, the Bats & the Ugly (second in series, first in Free Library),
A Liaden Universe Constellation and
A Beautiful Friendship (first in prequel series).
There are others in the bundle that I haven't read that are probably also very good.
The Baen Free Library is full of first (& sometimes second) in series. All are worth trying to see if you like the author/series.
