I purchased a new Oasis 3 but am perplexed by the auto brightness feature

Unlike an AMOLED cell phone, I would EXPECT this type of auto brightness behavior on Kindle
- Brightness turns low in bright light
- Brightness adjusts based on user level to mids in dim room

Instead the ACTUAL behavior is
- Brightness on auto is too low in dim room
- Brightness turns all the way to max in bright daylight when I would prefer no backlight


This is the inverse of what I would expect.

Is there any way to change the behavior and if not, a way to cause lights to only turn on say between 8:00pm and 8:00am (as is possible for warmth settings)?
