The one on the left is micro USB. It has been the standard for years. As far as I know, all Kindles and Fire tablets use it.
The one on the right is the newer USB C. It is an oval shape that can be plugged in without worrying which end is up. So far, no Kindle, Kobo or Nook has used it. But other electronics are rapidly adopting it as the new standard.

Yes, I probably got the names backward
I'll just keep it simple so I can't mess it up: my phone, mp3 player, and all kindles currently charge on the same cord, so having the kindle take a different cord would just be a nuisance to me.
