It seems the file was actually a PDF, not EPUB. I convert Google Play Epubs to AZW3 routinely without any problems. Often you can download both EPUB and PDF with a Google book. And sometimes there is only the PDF, which is impossible to convert without errors. Before buying a book from Google, check Additional Information. If it says "Original Pages" and not "Flowing Text", it's a PDF.
