Page number changes as you get tired and have to make the text bigger. It only even seems to work if you never change font face / size / margins / line spacing.
I don't mind it being an option. Chapter name on heading or beside footer info would be a nice option.
On a paper book I INSTANTLY have an idea how much is read/left, visually. I only find a page number on printed things as useful to access a page. On an ebook multiple bookmarks & hyperlinked TOC do that better.
