In your specific case, the fix is simple: instead of using the "hotfix" .bin, use the "bridge" .bin from the full JB package.
(The hotfix won't run on FW < 5.5.0, by design, as earlier FW could just run the bridge package directly).
I agree that it is quirky enough that it ought to be jotted down somewhere more clearly, I'll see where best to stick it...
