I've been playing with the custom pdfs and different layout settings for a while now. And to prove my point I'd like to show you that the margins and unused header/footer do make a difference.
By exporting an ebook to a custom pdf I managed to cut down on the number of pageturns from 1500 to about 950. Without using any extreme measures, the same font face and size, line spacing of 13 pts, 0.2 mm margins on both sides, 0.1 from the top, 0.4 from the bottom. The text is easy to read, easy to orientate in. 500 page turns is definitely a difference which does even reflect in the battery life.
