Our house is indeed very old. The oldest part was build in the 1500s and the newest part in the 1600s, there's another part in between. So it's not energy efficient and it won't help to put in central air. Not that that's even possible I think. My parents are thinking of getting a portable airco for their bedroom, which is pretty much the only room in the house it will be useful for.

At the moment I'm house sitting for friends. They live in a terraced house, which is relatively small. So at night I can open windows on both side of the house and it'll cool down relatively fast. At home we've got thick walls, in summer that means it takes a while to warm up inside, but once it does it takes a long time to cool down again. The drawback of my friends' place is that there are very few trees in the street, so once the sun is up temperatures rise very quickly.
