OK, it is clear that you cannot register the device because of outdated firmware.
But why can't you update it? Can you check as follows:
- connect the device to PC
- copy the update.bin to the root
- disconnect
- check the meny Update (it is greyed, as you wrote)
- connect again. Is update.bin in place?
- if yes, disconnect and restart (not reset) the device
- connect again. Is update.bin in place?
- if not, copy any e-book to the documents folder. Can you read it?
- restart again and check this e-book. If it disappeared, there are problems with the memory: it is corrupted or in the read only mode.
