I think the issue is largely moot: Amazon, Kobo, B&N do not sell eReaders without front light. The market has spoken!
It may be theoretically true that a given display will be clearer without front layers for the front light and touch screen but the front light expands the environments where reading is comfortable, without the need to carry around a separate book light as in the past.
