On my Glo and Glo HD readers, they definitely show much reduced contrast when the light is fully off. The background becomes gray instead of the white when the light is on, so of course that results in less contrast. The background color is about the same as my Sony PRS-350s were. For my eyesight (which I'll admit is crappy), I'd need quite a bit of external light to make reading comfortable without the front light.

When I had my PRS-350s, I found that adding bolder fonts made a huge difference for me also being able to read in dimmer light. The trick I did then was to rename the bold font style I preferred to what the reader would recognize as the normal font, and instantly had bolder text and in any font style I preferred. It's something I still do on my Kobo readers.
