The light bleed appears to be a manufacturing problem. It doesn't affect all Clara HDs, and for those it does affect, the amount varies. Mine wasn't enough to worry about. From pictures I have seen, some would have been to much for me to use.

There is a fairly simple fix. But, it does involve disassembling the device. That would break warranty. I did eventually do the fix on mine, when I opened it to change the SD card for a larger one. And it improved the reading experience more than I expected. If you want to look, there is a long thread discussing the problem in the Kobo forum.
