What do you have in Preferences->Add books->Reading metadata and Adding actions - what you describe suggests you don't have the right settings for what you want to do

You will need to get metadata from file name - because every edition of say Gulliver's Travels by Thomas Swift will have those values in the metadata

I would add the first one and edit the title to: Gulliver's Travels (1757), then add the second one and edit its title to: Gulliver's Travels (2017)
