The first thing I do when I open up a new novel is look at the table of contents and find out where the post-book junk starts (advertisements, excerpts, etc.) Typically there will be 10 or so pages. However, once in a while there's a lot more. I like to know before I start reading that the novel actually ends on page 350 of 400 or whatever so I am not taken by surprise.
