Another way that that could be construed is that "[since] you pay $5.99 a month, and you get one ebook credit per month, you [in effect] get one free ebook for $5.99 each month." I'm afraid that that's probably what they mean.

$5.99 per month/ebook might still be a good deal--you'd get 3 ebooks for only $5.99 each. You'd just have to make sure to cancel before the 3 months is up.
