Somerville, Charles: The Shriek (1922), v1, 24 Jun 2019

Hardly had Edith M Hull's sensational novel "The Sheik" appeared, and the famous Rudolf Valentino silent movie of it, than this boisterous parody appeared.

Lady Verbeena Mayonnaise ventures into the desert on a madcap expedition, is abducted by the Shriek, endures various comic misadventures, including being "discovered" by famous movie producer/Director Cyril Gristmille (no relation of course to Cecil B deMille!) before finding true love.

Even the cover has a joke in the bottom ornament...

(The book that inspired it, "The Sheik", is also in this Library).
