If you dont need collections, you'll be okay with the Nook. The flakiness is inherent, nothing to do with Windows. But it will work okay enough to work if you dont need to do anything fancy.
I recommend trying Koreader on a Kobo if you have one. I found it very unstable on Android, but it might work okay on the Fire.
