I think that Steve has a lot of good points. I saw the same thing occur with my father, who died earlier this year at the age of 89. Up until his last year or so, he was very active physically and most of the reading that he did was of newspapers. In his last year, when he wasn't able to get out as much, the TV was on most of the time. My mother used to be a big reader, but over the last 3 or 4 years, as she went into cognitive decline, her reading has dropped to zero.
