TOPAZ ebooks are larger. My impression is that they actually contain bitmaps of each character at six fixed sizes embedded in the document. This might still be consistent with your scanned document assumption, if the character bitmaps are built directly from the scans and there were two bitmaps representing "e" (one seriously broken).
