The error you are seeing usually indicates a problem on the device. Or, a problem with the device connection to the PC. There are no changes between calibre 3.42 and 3.44 that would affect how calibre accesses the Kobo devices. It is much more likely that you disconnected and reconnected the device or rebooted something in the mean time that solved the problem.
