Not directly applicable perhaps, but I recently replaced battery in my MacBook Pro. Instructions to calibrate were exactly what you suggest, and they said it was good to do it every once in awhile.

Though I cannot think of when I’ve intentionally allowed one of my Kindles drain to zero (leave them sit around long enough and they do it without any intention).
