My router works the same. If I want to let the router select which band any device connects to, by enabling "Smart Connect," it requires that the SSID, password, and all security options are identical on both 2.4 and 5.0GHz. I could set them up differently including different SSIDs if I disabled the Smart Connect feature, but it's been working perfectly for me for years as well, never any issues with any device connecting. I actually think my phone is the only device that uses 5.0 at this point.
