try a soft reset, and if needed a factory reset, on the Fire tablet before giving up on it
soft reset. hold down power button - ignore prompts - until it shuts down after abotu 30 secs. then power on. that cleans stuff up without deleting any apps or content.
factory reset is a seeings option I think
a new fire tablet is dirt cheap in amazon sales, about half the price of a paperwhite - depends what you want.
