I use the drop in function all the time. It 'announces' that it has connected. We have a doorbell thingie in the bathroom. I have a very disabled brother here and it saves a lot of steps. While the intercom system isn't fabulous, it's good enough for a brief message. For longer ones, he uses the intercom on the portable phone.
