I wonder if there's an issue with the kindle which is draining the batteries, especially as this has happened twice? Maybe an indexing issue? This happens if you load lots of books onto the kindle all at once - the kindle uses lots of battery while 'filing' the books, so it's best to leave it on charge during this process. (I always sideload books and leave the usb cable attached to the pc for a few hours, both to charge the kindle and help the books index.)

Are you sure that you fitted the batteries correctly? After this did you do a 24 hr wall-socket charge?

I've only once changed an ereader battery, my old Sony 505. A techie friend did this for me. I'm in the UK and managed to buy a battery from newpower99.com
but it's so long ago, I don't remember what I paid. However, I do remember the battery change being a very delicate process and the long charging time afterwards.

Another possible issue: do you have the wifi on all the time? This can be a big battery drain. Turn off the wifi unless you're downloading books.
