I read this as a Blackstone audio book about 10 years ago. I thought it was excellent. Forstchen is better known for his Lost Regiment sci-fi series. He completed a PhD in history at Purdue, and this book is based on the research he did for his doctoral dissertation, The 28th USCTs: Indiana's African-Americans go to War, 1863–1865.
