My first Kindle was a K2 and after 5 years I picked up DX when they came back for a while. The 3G whispersync never worked in my home so this has never been an issue at least for me. I have used it when I was away from home a couple of times, honestly maybe 2-3 times. So for 99% of the time I’ve had Kindles 10 + years. I’ve had to connect to a computer if I wanted my books there.
