We used to build the majority of computers we sold from components for a long time. Nowadays we might install a custom SSD or more memory or [rarely] a fancy video card. And that is it.
Oh ... the *vast* majority of computers are on Windows. The rest are without OS (and I think private customers try to install pirated or non-OEM version of Windows on it).

I was comparing Windows desktop to Mac desktop, not Windows desktop to Windows laptop, or whatever it is you are saying.
