With a Kobo, you just browse directly on your device and add the books. Here are instructions from Overdrive's site. Clearly steps 1-6 are a first time thing. Point is, you do all this without need of any PC: How to borrow OverDrive ebooks on your Kobo ereader

The equivalent page for Kindles on Overdrive seems to imply that you need to use a web browser first (unless these instructions are out of date): Getting started with Kindle Books from your library
You could use the web browser on your Kindle to go to Overdrive and borrow the book, or you could go to Overdrive on your PC and borrow the book that way. Either way, the book is automatically sent to your Kindle cloud and will be accessible directly from your Kindle.

I understand that on a Kobo I could search for and borrow the book directly from the device using the same method as I would to buy a book directly from the device, but I can't see myself ever doing that. The only time I've ever bought a book directly from a device was when I was reading a book that was part of a series, and when I finished it, a window popped up offering to sell me the next book in the series (I think that was on one of my Kindles, but I'm not sure...it was a while ago) I would have to be pretty hard up for something to read to search the store from my device.
