Its really commendable that you are being honest and not sending it back to Amazon.
Do you think its worth asking Amazon about this issue first? Perhaps they might consider the damage as a unit fault. Carrying an e-reader or tablet in one's backpack would of course be considered as a part of normal use.
Did your Nova reader have a protective case when it got damaged? If so, then I think you should discuss this with Amazon customer services either way. Good luck!!
