I'm not sure what happened, so I copied over the entries into a comma separated text column, the deleted the original column.

After some thinking I realized that this particular column (read status) has gone through some changes over the years. I will add or remove items answers. I don't change the title or heading of the column, but I do change the permitted answers.
Don't remove values from the allowed list until you have cleared them from use. This kind of field has no data value integrity check once the entry has been stored.
