It's only worth doing this on a Reader with no External slot.
My Kindle PW has about 3G of space for books.
I've only 16G SD cards in external slots as few PDFs are suitable and about 18,000 to 20,000 regular books, on average, might fit. It didn't seem worth paying more for 32G cards. Only my Kindles and PRS350 don't take SD card.
However add external card and use it for the purchased books. Put the "out of copyright" / Public Domain etc on the internal store.
