My K2 used at&t, not sprint. There doesn't seem to be any difference as far as the problem goes, owners of both models have the issue.

Personally, I think people are making too much of this issue. The 2nd gen Kindles are 10 years old at this point. Amazon has more than taken care of any obligation they had to support these older devices.
