It varies form book to book. Some books don't have page numbers.

When books do have page numbers, the numbers are not in the book file, but in a BookName.apnx file in the BookName.sdr directory. The apnx files are downloaded after the book, and not always right away.

Amazon used to list the book edition the page numbers are based on, but I do not know if they still do that.

On top of all that, the kindle is liable to be in or pop into loc mode. To get page numbers, cycle through the options by tapping on the loc number, then the various time left until page numbers show up.
