Basically, this is similar to Stephen King's THE STAND and like that book, there is a break from "Book 1" to "Book 2" about halfway through. When I was a teenager I read the first half (called "Book 1") and then I took what was supposed to be a break of a day or two. I never went back to it. I was dumb because I had absolutely loved it. Alas when I was younger, I would "half read" almost as many books as I read in total. Now I just bought it for $2.99 with the intention to start reading it all over and finish this time!
Keep an eye on McCammon with ereaderiq. His books go on sale fairly often. You can get a pretty large McCammon collection for cheap.

I preferred The Stand to Swan Song, but neither is really my type of story, though, having grown up in the '80's, I do have a soft spot for tales of nuclear war (which sounds so perverse, now that I've typed it)
