Reading stats in Kobo is a touchy thing. They tried to completely disable it for sideloaded books a while ago, so it could be the driver, it could be something they did, or it could be something the newer Kobo firmware expects.

When I get a chance I'll try to dig into that. @davidfor any idea if there's any firmware changes relevant to this?
