A question for Cartography people
I was wondering if there was any computerized map or decent atlas that uses the same base map but shows various countries, empires, etc. throughout history? I understand some would have to be approximations but that is sort of the point. When I read or watching history programs I often like to have the reference so I can see where areas line up in modern times. I dislike having hundreds of maps that use different cartography standards, colorizations and keys not to mention sizes. What I'd love is to be able to flip pages and see the same geographical layout on each page but with the borders and cities altered to reflect the timeline.
I'd be very thankful if anyone can direct me to a text along these lines.
(Someone just posted a thread on creating a new ebook Atlas and it made me recall this desire.)
