This walled garden thing doesn't really match what Amazon has. My Fire has the Google Play store. I can install 3rd party apps from other sources. I can buy books from Nook or Kobo and put them on my Paperwhite via Calibre. Amazon doesn't make that real easy but they don't try to make it difficult either. There are instructions all over the internet about how to get around Amazon's limitations.
Apple makes it a bit more difficult to get around they're walls but not a lot more.
It's easy enough to do most things on most devices if you know how and it's easy to find out how. The walled garden is an illusion. It only fools those who don't care.
