Right, there is no way to set the system date directly in Settings, only time of day.
It should not be necessary to register to get the date to reset, as I believe secure connection needed for registration requires the dates to match up as a prerequisite.
For example, when my (sadly neglected) Kindle 1’s battery drains it forgets the time and date, but just having it connect to cellular network fixes that even though it can no longer connect to Amazon for some reason (I’m guessing the contract was not renewed).
