I think ebooks are the real books now. Of course you can also get a paper imitation. I imagine that when bound books replaced scrolls there were similar comments.

If you read "The Magnificent Ambersons" you'll see similar comments about those new-fangled cars and the silliness of trying to replace a horse and buggy with those novelties. I predict cars will eventually succeed.

As for the novelty wearing off that happened for me pretty quickly. The point of a book is it's contents. The novelty of the format isn't very important and should wear off quickly or there's a risk that it'll overshadow the content.
