There is no download limit that I'm aware of (and I'd likely have hit it by now, if there were.) There is a limit on the number of currently registered devices other than mobile devices, and every build of Windows is a new device. This can be a major problem if you're in one of the Windows "build of the week" scenarios. However, Audible Support is quite willing and efficient at resetting this limit, though it usually requires a call rather than a simple web chat.
My recommendation is to always download a copy, preferably in .aax format (Audio Quality: Enhanced), and if you can, convert it to mp3 or m4b to store it for archival purposes, just in case. Then download to your preferred listening device whenever you're ready to listen to it.
