I am talking about "out of the box" or "freshly reset to a factory defaults" device.
Actually, I don't believe you can use any Kobo device without registering. There is, of course, a hack to make the device think that it is registered, but it involves editing the database on the device. If you're not comfortable doing that, I would look at other devices. There are many others that don't require registration...why go with one that does?
