Problems with Cloud Collection synching
I’m discovering some issues. Seems like server issue to me, as it is affecting every device linked to my account.
Collections added or removed with the iOS app have no effect on other devices registered to my account, including another iOS device. I discovered this when I deleted my ‘To Read’ and ‘Previously Read’ collections on my iPhone (now that this is more elegantly handled by the ability to tag books as ‘Read’). These were by far the largest I was using, and they had become painfully slow to update on Kindles (better part of a minute to add or remove one item). I also added another collection.
But these changes did not sync to my Paperwhite. I tried Restart. No change. Anticipating that I might need to Reset or Unregister the Kindle, I created a new collection on the Kindle consisting of all of the items I had downloaded to it (207 of them). This collection showed up on my iPhone, but with only 206 items in it!?). Whatever, I’m ready to Reset. Push the button, confirm. Nothing happens!
Okay time to pull out a spare Kindle. Same issue: the 2 deleted collections are still there, the added one is not. I Reset the spare. Now it mirrors my iPhone. I pull out another spare, and Deregister and Reregister. Turns out that works too, and is a little faster and less ‘destructive’ (though content is removed).
But still: adding and removing items on the iPhone has not effect on what is on the Kindles. But changes on the Kindles synch up to the iPhone. And a collection created on one Kindles does not show up on the other.
At one point I had 4 Kindles sitting plus my iPhone sitting next to each other, and each had a different set of collections on it, with different counts in some of the new ones I was trying to get to sync.
I’m still plumbing the extent of the issue but that will take some time. I have not had a chance to see what it looks like in Manage Your Content (requires desktop browser and this is an iPad). In the meantime I have a moratorium on editing collections (save for experimental collections).
What a mess. I cannot assume this is just MY problem. Would be interested to know if anyone else has noticed issues like this.
Also: Deregister failed on more than one device. After confirming, a little spinner action, then nothing. Had to force Restart. Then Deregister worked. That is probably the ‘fix’ for failed Reset as well, but my advice would be to go for Deregister unless you are giving it away or selling it. Deregister will not erase custom fonts for example, though it will erase Clippings file.
I don’t think Amazon is doing enough testing....
